Strict, but at the same time elegant streets of the most “geometric” district of Lisbon appeared in the second half of the 18th century on the site of a medieval city swept away by the Great Earthquake. The world’s first earthquake-resistant houses, the first urban development according to a pre-approved plan – for its time, Baixa was the most progressive and advanced place in Europe.
